What does it cost to run a mini-split?

A mini-split's running cost comes down to three things: how much heat it has to move (your climate and how long it runs), how efficiently it does it (its SEER2 for cooling and HSPF2 for heating), and what you pay per kilowatt-hour. Because inverter mini-splits modulate - running low and steady instead of blasting on and off - they are among the cheapest ways to heat and cool a room, often less than half the cost of electric resistance heat or window units.

Why efficiency ratings actually matter here

Two mini-splits with the same BTU capacity can cost noticeably different amounts to run. A higher SEER2 (cooling) or HSPF2 (heating) means more comfort per kilowatt-hour - and over a system's 12-to-15-year life, the efficient one can save more than its higher sticker price.
