Mini-split error codes, explained

When a ductless mini-split hits a problem it can't run through, it stops or limits itself and reports why - either as a code on the indoor display or the remote, or as a blinking-light pattern on the indoor head. The code is a shorthand: it points to the part or condition the system is unhappy about, so a technician (or a capable homeowner) can go straight to the cause instead of guessing.

The catch is that there is no universal mini-split code standard. Each brand rolls its own, which is why a chart that claims to decode "any mini-split" is unreliable. Start with your brand's guide above, or use the lookup at the top of this page.

The five kinds of faults behind almost every code

The numbering differs by brand, but the underlying problems fall into the same families:

  • Communication - the indoor and outdoor units aren't talking (wiring, connectors, or a control board).
  • Sensor - a temperature sensor (room, coil, discharge, or ambient) is disconnected or reading out of range.
  • Refrigerant / leak - low charge or a detected leak. On R-32 and R-454B systems this is an A2L (mildly flammable) refrigerant, so these codes are treated as stop-use.
  • Electrical / inverter - voltage, current, the IPM or PFC power module, or compressor-drive protection.
  • Protection - the system limiting itself over high pressure, overheating, freeze-up, or running outside its temperature range. Some of these clear on their own.

Reading a blinking-light code

No digital display? The indoor unit blinks the code out with its LEDs. Count the flashes: a light that blinks three times, pauses, then repeats is a "3-blink" code, and the operation and timer lights blinking together usually mean a different fault than either one alone. A slow, steady blink is often just defrost or start-up - not an error. Match the pattern to your brand's guide, then enter the resulting code above.

What is the difference between an error code and a status display?
An error code flags a fault the system wants fixed. A status display is normal behavior people mistake for a fault - defrost, standby, a filter-clean reminder, or a running-frequency readout. Each brand hub below separates the two, so you do not call a technician over a defrost cycle.
Why does the same code mean different things on different brands?
Because every manufacturer designs its own code scheme. A Daikin U0, a Samsung C462, a Midea EH03, and a Fujitsu 62.3 are unrelated numbering systems, and meanings can even shift between model generations of one brand. That is why these guides are organized by brand rather than as a single universal chart - a generic list would be wrong as often as right.
