Buying a mini split comes down to six decisions in order: size, climate fit, zones, voltage, install path, and only then brand. Get the first five right and the brand question mostly answers itself. This guide walks each decision with links to the tool that settles it.

1. Size to the room, not the sticker

Capacity (BTU/h) must match your space's actual load - square footage, insulation, ceilings, sun, climate. Undersized never catches up; oversized short-cycles, dehumidifies poorly, and wears faster. 2. Decide what winter needs to look like

If heating matters where you live, qualify models by their published low-temperature ratings - minimum operating temp and rated output at 5°F - not by "heat pump" on the box. Full explanation: cold-weather guide. Mild-climate buyers can skip this and shop on efficiency.

3. One zone or several?

A single-zone system (one outdoor + one indoor unit) is simpler, cheaper per BTU, and the right answer for one problem room. Multi-zone systems share an outdoor unit across rooms but cost more, complicate sizing, and lose efficiency when lightly loaded. 4. Check your electrical reality early

Mini splits run on 115V or 230V, need a dedicated circuit, and the breaker and wire size come from the manufacturer's published MCA/MOP - every model page here shows them. A 115V unit can be the difference between using an existing circuit path and a panel project; larger capacities are 230V territory. 5. Choose your install path honestly

  • DIY-friendly systems (6 in our database) ship with precharged line sets and are genuinely ownable for a competent DIYer - but electrical hookup is still licensed-electrician work in most jurisdictions, and self-install can change warranty terms (we flag this per model).
  • Professional installation costs more upfront, brings vacuum-and- charge rigor, code compliance, and typically stronger warranties - and it's the only path for most premium brands, which are dealer-only. Compare honestly: DIY vs professional.

6. Now the brand question

By this point you have a capacity class, a climate tier, a voltage, and an install path - which usually narrows the field to a handful of systems.
