The mini split defrost cycle, explained

Short version: in cold, damp weather, frost builds up on the outdoor unit, so a mini split periodically runs a defrost cycle - it briefly reverses to melt the ice off the outdoor coil. During it, the indoor unit stops blowing warm air for a few minutes and you'll often see steam rising off the outdoor unit. This is completely normal and automatic; it's the system protecting its own efficiency, not a malfunction. Knowing what it looks like keeps you from mistaking it for a problem. Here's what's happening.

Why frost forms in the first place

In heating mode, the outdoor coil gets colder than the outside air as it pulls heat from it. When the air is cold and humid (think low 30s to low 40s F with moisture), that coil drops below freezing and moisture in the air frosts onto it - just like frost on a car windshield. A frosted coil can't absorb heat well, so the unit has to clear it.

What the defrost cycle does

Automatically and on its own, the unit briefly reverses the refrigerant flow (running like cooling mode for a few minutes) to send warm refrigerant through the outdoor coil and melt the ice off. During those few minutes:

  • The indoor unit pauses its warm airflow (or blows cooler) so it doesn't push cold air at you - the fan may slow or stop.
  • The outdoor unit steams as the ice melts and evaporates - that visible "smoke" is water vapor, not a problem.
  • You may hear a whoosh or click as the system switches modes.

Then it switches back to heating and resumes normally. A cycle typically lasts a few minutes and repeats as needed in frosty conditions.

Those can signal a stuck defrost control, low refrigerant, a drainage problem, or a fan issue - time to check troubleshooting or call a technician. Also make sure the outdoor unit is clear of snow and has drainage below it so melt water doesn't refreeze.
