The three routes to phone control
- Built-in WiFi. Some newer units include WiFi and a brand app out of the box - nothing to add. Check the model's spec before assuming.

- Remote access. Turn it on from the driveway, or check that you didn't leave it running - genuinely useful for a guest room, cabin, or short-term rental.
- Voice control. "Set the bedroom to 72" via Alexa or Google, if the app supports it.
- Away/eco modes and monitoring. Some apps track runtime and let you set geofencing or vacation modes.
The controls map to the same modes you'd use on the remote - WiFi just makes them reachable from anywhere.
Is it worth it?
For a room you're always in, the remote is fine and WiFi is a nice-to-have. Smart control earns its keep for rooms you're not always in or near: a guest suite, a home office, a vacation property, or any space where "turn it on before I get there" or "make sure it's off" is genuinely useful. It doesn't make the unit more efficient by itself - that's the inverter's job - but scheduling it well can trim runtime.
