Multi-zone saves outdoor real estate and can save total equipment cost versus many separate systems - at the price of design complexity, efficiency compromises, and an all-eggs-one-basket outdoor unit.
Why single-zone is the default
- Efficiency reality: multi-zone outdoor units run less efficiently when only one small zone calls for heat or cooling - a common state in real households. Two right-sized single-zone systems frequently beat one multi-zone on seasonal energy use for the same rooms.
- Sizing traps: multi-zone design tempts people into oversizing ("connect capacity" ratings hide this), and oversized zones short-cycle and dehumidify poorly.
