Colorado lists 2026 heat pump tax credits for eligible installations through registered contractors.
Mini-split coverage unclear
Colorado Energy Office names air-source heat pumps and variable refrigerant flow heat pump systems, but this source does not explicitly name ductless or mini-split equipment.
For heat pumps installed on or after January 1, 2026, air-source heat pump tax credit is $1,000 with a minimum $333 customer discount; ground-source, water-source, or combined-source tax credit is $2,000 with a minimum $667 customer discount; water heater tax credit is $250 with a minimum $83 customer discount.
- Equipment
- Air-source, ground-source, water-source, combined-source, heat pump hot water heater, thermal energy network, and variable refrigerant flow heat pump systems installed in Colorado through a registered contractor.
- Income
- No income restriction is published; Colorado residents, businesses, and other organizations may qualify when installing an eligible heat pump through a registered contractor.
- Efficiency
- All heat pumps must be ENERGY STAR certified. Air-source heat pumps must be AHRI matched, and space heating or cooling heat pumps must be designed to meet at least 80% of annual heating needs.
- Install
- A Colorado Energy Office registered contractor must install the equipment, claim the tax credit, and provide at least 33% of the tax credit as an upfront discount shown separately as State of Colorado Heat Pump Discount on the customer invoice. December 31, 2026 is the final date to apply to become a registered contractor for eligible 2026 installations.

Colorado Home Energy Rebate Program - HEAR Single-Family

Income-qualified program
HEAR is for low- and moderate-income households. Households below 80% AMI may receive 100% of qualified project cost up to the HEAR maximums, and households at 80% to 150% AMI may receive 50% of qualified project cost up to the HEAR maximums.
HEAR maximum rebate amounts are $1,750 for a heat pump water heater, $8,000 for a cold climate heat pump for space heating and cooling, $3,000 for a heat pump for space heating and cooling, and $14,000 total maximum rebate per household or unit.
- Equipment
- ENERGY STAR heat pump water heaters, cold climate heat pumps for space heating and cooling, and heat pumps for space heating and cooling in eligible Colorado homes and small multifamily units.
- Efficiency
- All eligible HEAR upgrades listed by the Colorado Energy Office must be ENERGY STAR certified.
- Install
- Household must work through a registered contractor. The contractor verifies eligibility, submits the project proposal, installs approved upgrades, and subtracts the rebate from the qualified project cost. Region 1 closed for applications after April 27, 2026, and Region 2 accepted applications until August 1, 2026 unless funding was reserved sooner.

Code Notes
- Colorado mechanical permit and fee rules are local. Boulder provides a municipal planning data point where its 2026 fee schedule says electrical, mechanical, and plumbing sub-contractor permits and fees are required when associated with a general permit unless stated otherwise, and mechanical permit fees are based on the value of mechanical materials and labor. The Boulder mechanical schedule lists $19.90 for the first $800 plus $3.75 for each additional $100 or fraction above $800. Actual permit scope and fee are decided by the local authority having jurisdiction.
