Michigan mini-split cost guide
Much of Michigan is climate zone 5 / 6 (north). Electricity here runs 22.01 cents per kilowatt-hour, so a typical 12,000 BTU system costs about $656 a year to run. 3 rebate programs below can cut the installed price. Installed prices are mostly national — labor is the part that varies locally.

Typical Sizes And Installed Cost
Equipment, materials, electrical work and permits are priced the same everywhere. Only the labor line is adjusted to this state, which is why these ranges sit close to the national ones.

Consumers Energy Heating and Cooling Rebates
Applications open
Consumers Energy publishes current heating and cooling rebates with participating-contractor submission flow and no closure stated.
Covers mini-splits
The Consumers Energy heat pump rebate table explicitly lists Ductless Mini-Split Heat Pump and publishes a $350 rebate row.
Air-source heat pump rebate is $300. Ductless mini-split heat pump rebate is $350. Ground-source heat pump rebates are $200 to $300.
- Equipment
- Air-source heat pumps, ductless mini-split heat pumps, and ground-source heat pumps installed for Consumers Energy customers through the heating and cooling rebate program.
- Income
- No income restriction is published for these Consumers Energy heating and cooling rebates.
- Efficiency
- Air-source heat pump rebate row lists SEER2 15.2 to 15.99 or higher. Ductless mini-split heat pumps must be minimum SEER2 17 to 25 or greater and minimum HSPF2 8 to 12.5 or greater. Ground-source heat pump rows use EER 17 to 18.99 and EER 19 or higher.
- Install
- Participating contractors file the paperwork after installing eligible equipment or performing a tune-up. Consumers Energy says only systems installed or tune-ups performed by a Consumers Energy participating contractor qualify for rebates, and customers should expect the rebate check in six to eight weeks unless the contractor offers an instant rebate.

DTE Residential Energy Efficiency Heat Pump Replacement Rebates
Applications open
DTE publishes current replacement rebate tables and says rebates are available while funds last.
Covers mini-splits
The DTE replacement rebate table explicitly lists Ductless Mini-Split Heat Pump rows and the page states ductless mini-splits are eligible for electric customers replacing electric heating.
Cold-climate air-source heat pump rebates are $900 to $1,200. Standard air-source heat pump rebates are $150 to $500. Ductless mini-split heat pump rebates are $700 to $1,000. Ground-source heat pump rebates are $600 to $800.
- Equipment
- Cold-climate air-source heat pumps, standard air-source heat pumps, ground-source heat pumps, and ductless mini-split heat pumps for DTE residential electric customers replacing electric heating.
- Income
- No income restriction is published for these DTE replacement rebates.
- Efficiency
- Cold-climate air-source heat pump tiers require 15.2 to 16+ SEER2, 8.4 to 9.1+ HSPF2, and EER2 of at least 10.0. Standard air-source heat pump rows require 15.2 to 17.99 SEER2 AHRI rated or 18+ SEER2 AHRI rated. Ductless mini-split rows require more than 31.5 SEER2 with HSPF2 10, or 17 to 31.5 SEER2 with HSPF2 8, and both SEER2 and HSPF2 requirements must be met.
- Install
- A DTE participating contractor must size the system, remove old equipment, install the new unit, and submit the rebate form online. New construction homes, first-time installations, and commercial properties are not eligible. Premise eligibility is limited to single-family homes of two or fewer connected units that are individually metered and have their own heating, cooling, and water-heating equipment.

Michigan Home Energy Rebates Program HEAR Heat Pump Rebates
Application status unclear
Michigan EGLE says statewide MiHER is launched, but new income-qualified applications for EGLE Detroit District properties are temporarily unavailable while funding capacity is reviewed.
Mini-split coverage unclear
The EGLE MiHER source says heat pump for heating or cooling and does not explicitly name ductless or mini-split equipment.
Income-qualified program
HEAR rebates are available to households with incomes at or below 150% of Area Median Income. MiHER prioritizes households at or below 80% of county Area Median Income.
HEAR maximum rebates include $8,000 for a heat pump for heating or cooling, subject to the $14,000 HEAR household cap. Across HER and HEAR, households are eligible for up to $34,000, and HER households are eligible for up to $20,000.
- Equipment
- High-efficiency electric equipment under MiHER's Home Electrification and Appliance Rebates program, including a heat pump for heating or cooling in qualified Michigan homes.
- Efficiency
- The EGLE launch release identifies high-efficiency electric technologies and a heat pump for heating or cooling; equipment eligibility is determined through the MiHER program and participating contractors.
- Install
- Contractors enroll families, assess homes, conduct energy upgrades, and capture energy savings under MiHER. The current EGLE Home Energy Rebates page says new income-qualified applications for Detroit District properties are temporarily unavailable while MiHER reviews current applications and funding capacity.
Federal credit timing and state-program caveats are covered in the mini-split rebates and tax credits guide.
Code Notes
- Michigan mechanical work generally requires a permit from the appropriate enforcing agency before work starts, except for replacement of minor parts. LARA says the Michigan Mechanical Code covers mechanical systems including heating, ventilation, refrigeration, air conditioning, ductwork, and solar or geothermal systems, and the enforcing agency may be the state, county, or local unit of government.
- Michigan mechanical permit fees are local, not statewide. Detroit provides a municipal data point in its Mechanical Fee Schedule where homeowner central heating unit permits are $203 each, new or replacement burner permits are $142 or $231 by input rating, gas piping system permits are $127 per system, fan coil and VAV units are $200 each, ductwork installation is $200 flat, duct alteration is $105 flat, and refrigeration installation permits are $101 for self-contained systems or $130 per motor/compressor for remote systems. Actual permit scope and fee are decided by the local authority having jurisdiction.
