Regional cost guide
Nebraska mini-split cost guide
Much of Nebraska is climate zone 5A. Electricity here runs 13.25 cents per kilowatt-hour, so a typical 12,000 BTU system costs about $395 a year to run. 3 rebate programs below can cut the installed price. Installed prices are mostly national — labor is the part that varies locally.

Typical Sizes And Installed Cost
Equipment, materials, electrical work and permits are priced the same everywhere. Only the labor line is adjusted to this state, which is why these ranges sit close to the national ones.

LES Sustainable Energy Program and City of Lincoln Heat Pump Combo
Applications open
LES publishes remaining 2026 funding, an active contractor route, and January 1-December 31, 2026 first-come availability. The City add-on began September 1, 2026 and has an active address portal and published funding balances.
Covers mini-splits
LES and the City expressly identify mini-split heat pumps as eligible.
Income-qualified program
None for the $1,000 LES incentive. The $3,000 City of Lincoln tier requires household income at or below 80% of Lincoln area median income and preapproval; rental units are not eligible for that tier. Eligible general-population households receive the address-based City amount published by the incentive portal.
$1,000 LES incentive for a qualifying air-source or mini-split heat pump. Beginning September 1, 2026, the City add-on makes the combined total $4,000 for qualifying households at or below 80% AMI, up to $1,500 for general-population heat-pump replacement, or up to $2,500 for general-population air-conditioner replacement.
- Equipment
- Qualifying air-source or mini-split heat pump under 5.4 tons for an LES residential customer. The City of Lincoln add-on covers eligible Lincoln homeowners replacing a heat pump or central air conditioner at least five years old; the base $1,000 LES incentive does not require an existing-system replacement.
- Efficiency
- The system must be AHRI rated and either inverter-driven/variable capacity or rated at least 15.2 SEER2 and 12.0 EER2. Equipment with only legacy SEER/EER ratings does not qualify.
- Install
- Use a participating contractor, who submits the project and credits the approved incentive on the invoice, or contact LES for direct instructions. A mechanical permit is required. The income-qualified City tier requires approval before installation. LES incentives exceeding $5,000 require preauthorization; other projects are due within 90 days of the invoice.

NPPD EnergyWise High Efficiency Heat Pump Incentive
Applications open
The current EnergyWise page provides a downloadable application and directs homeowners to submit it to their participating local utility. The application is dated January 2026 and the current page publishes the incentive amounts.
Covers mini-splits
EnergyWise expressly publishes three ductless mini-split tiers and a mini-split application.
Ductless mini-split: $400 at the fixed-capacity threshold, $600 for variable capacity, or $1,200 for variable-capacity multi-head equipment of at least 3 tons. Air-source heat pump: $400 at 15.2-16 SEER2, $800 at 16.1-18, or $1,200 at 18.1 or higher or for variable capacity.
- Equipment
- Permanently installed ductless mini-split, air-source, or geothermal heat pump primarily used for space heating in a residential single-family dwelling served by a participating local electric utility. Separately metered multifamily residences are treated as residential.
- Income
- None published for the direct incentive.
- Efficiency
- Ductless fixed-capacity systems require at least 16 SEER2, 12.5 EER2, and 7.7 HSPF2; variable systems require manufacturer inverter-driven documentation. Air-source tiers require at least 15.2 SEER2, 11.7 EER2, and 7.5 HSPF2, or documented variable capacity. All qualifying equipment must be an AHRI-listed matched indoor/outdoor combination.
- Install
- Install and operate the system, obtain the dealer and homeowner signatures, attach the AHRI certificate and sales receipt, and submit the application to the homeowner's local electric utility. The local utility pays the homeowner; NPPD pays the qualified installation incentive to the dealer.

OPPD HVAC Smart Rebates
Applications open
OPPD labels the current offer "AVAILABLE - Rebates are still open" and provides an Apply Now route. Applications must be submitted in the current year and within four months of installation.
Mini-split coverage unclear
The current OPPD offer says heat pump but does not expressly say ductless or mini-split.
All qualifying heat pumps receive $525. The combined air-conditioner schedule is $265 at 15.2 SEER2, $375 at 16.2, $450 at 18.2 or 18.1, and $525 at 20 or higher.
- Equipment
- New qualifying air conditioner or heat-pump system conditioning living space in a Nebraska home served by OPPD on a residential service rate.
- Income
- None published.
- Efficiency
- The air conditioner or heat pump must be at least 15.2 SEER2 and certified as an eligible system by AHRI.
- Install
- Use a licensed HVAC contractor and submit the application, AHRI certificate, and paid contractor invoice within the current year and within four months of installation. Sunrooms, garages, and outbuildings are not eligible living space.
Federal credit timing and state-program caveats are covered in the mini-split rebates and tax credits guide.
Code Notes
- Lincoln's current mechanical fee page lists a heat pump at $35, a ducted mini-split evaporator at $30, and a non-ducted mini-split evaporator at $15. The current mechanical permit form states a $35 minimum fee. The authority determines the applicable equipment, electrical, and other permit charges from project scope. This is a City of Lincoln planning data point, not a statewide Nebraska fee.
