Trane is a major US HVAC name, but our ductless coverage of it is 2 systems in one line - the ML Series - and both are on R-410A. That makes Trane the only brand in our catalog that is entirely on the outgoing refrigerant.

The ML Series covers 9,000 and 12,000 BTU at SEER2 20, rated to -4F, on 115V. It is Mitsubishi-built hardware sold under the Trane badge, which is worth knowing - the fault codes and much of the engineering trace back to Mitsubishi.

Who should buy Trane ductless: someone who specifically wants Trane dealer support and warranty handling for a small, mild-climate installation and is getting a meaningful discount on legacy stock. Who should skip it: almost everyone else, for the reasons below.

What to know about Trane

  • Every Trane ductless system we track is R-410A, which is phasing down under the AIM Act. That means rising refrigerant cost across the life of the system for any future repair. On a 15-year purchase that is a real number, and it is the single most important fact on this page.
  • -4F and SEER2 20 are unremarkable next to what the rest of the market offers on current refrigerant. Mitsubishi - who build this hardware - sell R-454B systems reaching SEER2 35 and -22F under their own badge.
  • Only 9,000 and 12,000 BTU, 115V only. There is no larger Trane ductless system in our catalog.
  • Our Trane coverage is thin by our own standard. If Trane has released an R-454B ductless line we have not yet captured it, and we would rather say that than let two legacy systems stand in for a brand.

Trane sizes and capacities

Room sizes use the same 25 BTU per square foot baseline as our sizing calculator, for an average-insulation room.

  • 9,000 BTU - bedroom or office to roughly 350 sq ft, on 115V.
  • 12,000 BTU - large bedroom or living room to roughly 475 sq ft, on 115V, and the ceiling of our Trane coverage.

For anything larger, or for anything you intend to keep past the R-410A phase-down, look at Mitsubishi's own catalog - same builder, current-generation refrigerant, far more range.
