A mini split needs little upkeep, but not zero - and the little it needs protects both its efficiency and its lifespan. The big three are the filters, the coils, and the condensate drain. Most of it is DIY on a simple schedule; one part is worth a pro once a year. Skip it and you pay in higher bills, weak airflow, musty smells, and a shorter-lived compressor.
The one task that matters most: clean the filters
The washable filters in the indoor head are the single highest-payoff maintenance job. A clogged filter chokes airflow, drops efficiency, strains the blower, and lets the coil get dirty.
- How often: every 2-4 weeks in heavy use, monthly otherwise.
- How: pop the front panel, slide the filters out, rinse with lukewarm water (a little mild soap for grime), let them dry fully, reinstall. No vacuum-only shortcuts for greasy or dusty filters.

Clean the coils and blower once a year
Behind the filters, the evaporator coil and blower wheel collect a film that filters can't stop. Once a year:

- This is where musty smells usually start - biofilm on a damp coil. A deep clean fixes most odor complaints.

Keep the outdoor unit clear
The outdoor condenser rejects (or absorbs) heat through its fins, so it needs airflow:

- Keep at least a couple of feet of clearance, and brush off snow in winter so the coil can breathe.
An outdoor unit that won't run or short-cycles sometimes traces back to a blocked or dirty condenser.
Watch the condensate drain
The indoor unit pulls humidity out of the air and drains it outside through a condensate line. That line can clog with algae, causing water to leak from the head:
- Check that water drains freely and the line slopes downhill.
- If the drain can't run by gravity, a condensate pump moves it - keep it clear and working.
- A clogged drain is also a common source of smells.
Once a year: the professional check
A homeowner can do everything above. One visit a year is worth a professional for what you can't easily check yourself: refrigerant charge and leaks, electrical connections, and a full coil/blower deep clean if you skip it. It's cheap insurance on a 15-20 year system.
