First, make sure it's actually short cycling. Inverter mini splits are SUPPOSED to run almost continuously at varying speed - long, quiet, low-power runs are the design working. Short cycling means the compressor starts, runs a few minutes, stops, and repeats - usually with the room never settling at temperature. If your unit simply ramps down to a whisper, that's not a fault.
Safe checks
- Is the unit wildly oversized for the room? The classic cause. A 24k unit in a 300 sq ft bedroom hits setpoint in minutes and shuts down before dehumidifying or evening out - repeatedly. Check your size against the sizing calculator; if you're more than a class oversized, cycling is the symptom of a purchase problem, and no repair fixes it.
- Sensor placement and drafts. The return-air sensor sits at the unit, near the ceiling - direct sunlight on the unit, a heat source under it, or supply air washing back into the return (closed doors, shelf directly below) fools it into rapid satisfaction. Follow-me / remote-sensor mode, if your model has it, moves the decision to the remote's location.
- Filters and airflow - restricted flow can trip protective shutdowns; clean and retry.
- Power cycle at the breaker after any changes.
- Error codes between cycles? Protection codes (pressure, voltage, module temperature) that clear and recur cause stop-start behavior - look them up in the library and quote them to your technician.
Beyond the safe checks (technician scope)
Recurring protection trips (pressure or electrical), refrigerant undercharge (cycling with poor cooling), control-board or sensor faults.
The honest answer nobody wants
If the unit is badly oversized, the durable fixes are: use a lower fan mode and accept longer gentle runs where the unit allows it, add load (open the space it serves), or - for chronic comfort and humidity problems - replace with the right size. We'd rather tell you that than sell you three service visits.
