Cooper & Hunter is the brand most likely to be mis-shelved as a budget import. We track 111 systems across eleven lines, and every one is a professional install, with flared line sets and a licensed tech for the vacuum and startup. It is not a DIY alternative to MRCOOL. What it offers is breadth: wall units, ceiling cassettes, slim ducted units and multi-zone condensers, all on current-generation R-454B, with no legacy refrigerant anywhere.

The wall-mounted range: - Astoria (13 systems) and Astoria Pro (13 systems) both span 6,000-36,000 BTU at SEER2 19-27.4. - Olivia (15 systems) covers the same capacities at SEER2 19.5-26, with 115V options. - Olivia Midnight (11 systems) is its black-cased version. - MIA (7 systems, SEER2 18.7-21.5) is the budget line.

What to know about Cooper & Hunter

  • The cold rating belongs to the model, not the line. Nine of the eleven lines mix -22F and -13F models. Only Hyper Heat Multi-Zone is rated to -22F throughout, and about half the systems we track carry that rating. For a cold climate, check the exact model page before you buy.
  • Astoria and Astoria Pro certify identically. Both lines span 6,000-36,000 BTU at SEER2 19-27.4 with the same mix of -22F and -13F models. The Pro badge doesn't buy you measurable performance, so choose between them on features, finish and price, not on the spec sheet. Anyone paying a meaningful premium for "Pro" on performance grounds is paying for nothing.
  • Olivia Midnight is a finish variant, not a performance tier. It is the black-cased Olivia. Its certified efficiency floor is a little higher (SEER2 21.7 vs 19.5), but it stops at 24,000 BTU where standard Olivia reaches 36,000. Buy Midnight because you want the look, and check that the capacity you need is in the range.
  • MIA is the outlier, and the one to be careful with. It runs SEER2 18.7-21.5, is rated to -13F at best, and its 12k 115V version heats only to +5F. It's the cheapest way into the brand and the least capable line in it. In a cold climate, spend up to an Astoria or Olivia model rated to -22F.
  • The two multi-zone families look alike and are not. Hyper Multi-Zone posts the higher efficiency (SEER2 24-25.1) but is rated only to -13F. Hyper Heat Multi-Zone gives up about a point of SEER2 to hold -22F. For a heating job, take the Hyper Heat.
  • 115V is available in Olivia, Olivia Midnight and MIA at the small capacities, which helps if you're avoiding a new 230V circuit. Astoria and Astoria Pro are 230V throughout.
  • Cooper & Hunter sells mainly online, so warranty service runs through the brand rather than a local dealer. That is the trade-off behind the price.

Cooper & Hunter sizes and capacities

Room sizes use the same 25 BTU per square foot baseline as our sizing calculator, for a room with average insulation. Run the calculator for a real answer.

  • 6,000 BTU: a small bedroom or office, up to roughly 240 sq ft. Available in Astoria, Astoria Pro, Olivia and Olivia Midnight, so C&H covers the small end better than most value brands.
  • 9,000 BTU: a bedroom or office up to roughly 350 sq ft. Offered in every wall-mounted line, MIA included, so this is where the choice of line matters most.
  • 12,000 BTU: a large bedroom or living room up to roughly 475 sq ft, and the most common 115V capacity.
  • 18,000 BTU: an open-plan space or insulated garage up to roughly 700 sq ft, and the entry point for both multi-zone families.
  • 24,000 BTU: large open areas up to roughly 950 sq ft. The top of the MIA and Olivia Midnight ranges.
  • 36,000 BTU: whole-floor or shop use up to roughly 1,400 sq ft, in Astoria, Astoria Pro and Olivia.
  • Above 36,000 BTU: the Slim Duct and ceiling-cassette lines, up to 58,000 and 48,000 BTU, for large open spaces fed from the ceiling.

Cooper & Hunter multi-zone options

Cooper & Hunter runs two multi-zone families covering 18,000 to 36,000 BTU, and the naming actively misleads:

Hyper Multi-Zone (18,000-36,000 BTU) - SEER2 24-25.1, rated to -13F. The efficiency leader.

Hyper Heat Multi-Zone (19,000-36,000 BTU) - SEER2 23-25, rated to -22F. Slightly less efficient, nine degrees more heating capability.

"Hyper" and "Hyper Heat" sound like the same family with a badge; they are different cold-weather products. If you are heating multiple rooms through a real winter, the extra word is the one that matters.

For two rooms, price two single-zone systems first - single-zone avoids the part-load penalty and a failure only takes out one room.
