Mitsubishi Electric is the benchmark for professionally installed mini splits. It has the best technical documentation in the industry, a deserved reputation for reliability, and performance at the very top of the range. Its FX Deluxe Hyper-Heat is among the most efficient systems you can buy, and its SMART MULTI keeps a whole multi-room system heating down to -24F. It also has one of the widest ranges of any brand, which makes it the hardest to shop.

These systems are sold through dealers, and a professional install by a licensed contractor is a condition of the warranty. They aren't DIY units, and we don't sell them: Mitsubishi pages here offer installation quotes rather than buy buttons.

Who should buy Mitsubishi: someone hiring a contractor who plans to keep the system 15 years or more, especially in a cold climate, and who values documentation and dealer support enough to pay for them. Who should skip it: anyone installing it themselves, because the warranty won't survive it. And anyone driven by up-front cost: the value brands deliver most of the performance for a lot less.

What to know about Mitsubishi Electric

  • Mitsubishi is in the middle of a refrigerant change, and it matters.
  • Five wall-mount lines come in an outgoing R-410A version and a newer R-454B successor: FS to FX, GS to GX, HM to HX, JP to JX, and WR to WX.
  • R-410A is being phased down, so repairs on those units will get more expensive over the years.
  • Buy the newer line, unless the older one is discounted enough to cover that risk.
  • Whether Hyper-Heat costs efficiency depends on the line.
  • The FX Deluxe Hyper-Heat beats the standard FS on efficiency and keeps heating 9 degrees colder, so it's an easy upgrade.
  • In the GS line, the Hyper-Heat version also keeps heating 9 degrees colder, but it's less efficient in winter at every size. Choose it only if your winters call for it.
  • The multi-zone Hyper-Heat versions give up almost nothing.
  • The install is part of the price. A professional install is a warranty condition, so budget for it from the start.
  • Most buyers are really choosing between two lines:
  • the GX, the mainstream wall unit, in the widest range of sizes;
  • the FX Deluxe Hyper-Heat, the premium pick for efficiency and deep cold. The MXZ outdoor units cover multi-room jobs.

Mitsubishi Electric sizes and capacities

For an average room, roughly:

  • 6,000 BTU - a small bedroom or office up to about 240 sq ft. At this size, the FX Deluxe Hyper-Heat is among the most efficient mini splits you can buy.
  • 9,000 BTU - a bedroom or office up to about 350 sq ft. Every wall-mount line comes in this size, so it's where the line you pick matters most.
  • 12,000 BTU - a large bedroom or living room up to about 475 sq ft. At this size the JP and JX run on 115 volts; they're the only Mitsubishi single-room systems that don't need a 240-volt circuit.
  • 17,200 to 22,400 BTU - an open living area up to about 700 to 900 sq ft.
  • 30,600 to 33,800 BTU - a whole floor up to about 1,350 sq ft, in the GS and GX lines. Efficiency falls off at this size, as it does for most brands.

Mitsubishi Electric multi-zone options

Mitsubishi's multi-room systems come in two families, built for different jobs.

The MXZ-D ported multi-zone outdoor units run two to five rooms. Their Hyper-Heat (H2i) versions keep heating several degrees colder for almost no loss of efficiency.

The MXZ SMART MULTI is the bigger, newer platform, and it's the cold-climate answer. It keeps a whole multi-room system heating down to -24F, at better efficiency than the ported line. A few single-room systems from other brands are rated colder, but none of them does it across several rooms. At the sizes we list, the SMART MULTI and SMART MULTI H2i carry the same ratings, so the H2i badge doesn't buy you anything extra here.

For two rooms, price two single-zone systems against one multi-zone first. You avoid the efficiency loss when only one room is running, and a breakdown only takes out one room.
