GREE is one of the largest air-conditioner manufacturers in the world, and our GREE catalog covers the widest span of capability of any brand we track: 91 systems across 11 lines, running from SEER2 16 to 30 and from a +5F floor to a -31F rating. That range is the opportunity and the hazard - two GREE systems can be nothing alike.

The lines worth knowing: Sapphire R32 is the efficiency flagship (SEER2 27-30, -22F). Vireo and Envo are the strong mainstream (SEER2 24-27, -22F). Livo is the volume line (SEER2 19-22, -13F, with 115V options). Zeno is the budget floor (SEER2 16-19). Vireo+ Ultra is the extreme-cold outlier at -31F. Multi-zone splits into Free Match (-22F) and Free Match ECO (+5F).

All GREE systems we track are professionally installed. 10 of the 50 are still on R-410A - Vireo GEN3, Sapphire (original), Vireo+ Ultra and Livo GEN4 - with R-32 successors already in the catalog for Sapphire, Vireo and Livo.

Who should buy GREE: a buyer hiring an installer who wants premium-tier efficiency at value pricing and is willing to read the line name carefully. Who should skip it: anyone who wants one obvious choice - GREE's range rewards research and punishes assuming the badge means anything on its own.

What to know about GREE

  • Buy the R-32 line, not its R-410A predecessor. Sapphire, Vireo and Livo each exist in both generations. R-410A is phasing down under the AIM Act, so the legacy version carries rising refrigerant cost for any future repair - and in Sapphire's case the R-32 successor is also simply better (SEER2 27-30 against 21.5-27).
  • Sapphire R32 is the one to want. SEER2 27-30 with -22F rated heating is genuinely premium performance, and GREE prices well below the brands it matches on paper.
  • Zeno is the floor, and it shows. SEER2 16-19 is the weakest range in our GREE catalog and among the weakest we certify anywhere. It is a budget cooling unit; do not buy it expecting Vireo or Sapphire behaviour.
  • Vireo+ Ultra is a specialist, and the trade is real. Its -31F rating is among the deepest we certify, but it is R-410A, only offered at 28,000-33,000 BTU, and certifies SEER2 18-20 - well below the rest of the cold-capable GREE range. Buy it if you genuinely heat below -22F. Otherwise Vireo or Envo R32 is the better system.
  • Free Match vs Free Match ECO is the multi-zone trap. Free Match holds -22F at SEER2 21. Free Match ECO is +5F at SEER2 17. The names suggest a trim level; the difference is 27 degrees of heating.
  • 115V is available in Livo and Zeno at the small capacities.

GREE sizes and capacities

Room sizes use the same 25 BTU per square foot baseline as our sizing calculator, for an average-insulation room. Run the calculator for a real answer.

  • 9,100 BTU - bedroom or office to roughly 365 sq ft. Offered in Livo, Vireo, Envo, Sapphire and Zeno, so this is where the line choice matters most on the whole site.
  • 12,000 BTU - large bedroom or living room to roughly 475 sq ft, and the most common 115V capacity.
  • 18,000 BTU - open-plan space to roughly 700 sq ft, and the entry point for both multi-zone families.
  • 22,000-24,000 BTU - large open areas to roughly 900 sq ft. Top of the Vireo, Envo, Sapphire and Zeno ranges.
  • 28,000-33,600 BTU - whole-floor use to roughly 1,100-1,350 sq ft. Above 24,000 the efficient lines stop: what remains is Livo (SEER2 19-22) and Vireo+ Ultra (SEER2 18-20). The largest GREE single-zone systems are not the efficient ones.

GREE multi-zone options

GREE runs two multi-zone families, and as with the single-zone lines the naming hides the difference:

Free Match - 7 condensers, 18,000-48,000 BTU, SEER2 21, rated to -22F. The one to buy for a heating job, and the broadest multi-zone range we track for GREE.

Free Match ECO - 5 condensers, 18,000-42,000 BTU, SEER2 17, rated to +5F. Cheaper, meaningfully less efficient, and not a heating system.

"ECO" reads like an efficiency badge. It certifies four SEER2 points lower and gives up 27 degrees of rated heating. If you are heating with it, buy Free Match.

For two rooms, price two single-zone systems first - single-zone avoids the part-load penalty and a failure only takes out one room.
