Bosch mini splits

Bosch brings a major European engineering name to US mini-splits with an unusually simple catalog: 21 systems, essentially one product family - Climate 5000 - in its current Gen 4 R-454B form, plus three remaining legacy R-410A systems.

That simplicity is the appeal. Where GREE asks you to choose between eleven lines and LG between ten, Bosch asks you to pick a capacity. Gen 4 spans 6,000-36,000 BTU at SEER2 19-27.4, with rated heating to -22F on the cold-capable configurations and -13F on others. Multi-zone Gen 4 covers 18,000-36,000 BTU at SEER2 23-25.1. Everything is professionally installed.

Who should buy Bosch: someone hiring an installer who wants solid, well-documented equipment without studying a product matrix, and who values the engineering reputation. Who should skip it: anyone who needs a deep-cold specialist or the absolute efficiency ceiling - Bosch is consistently good rather than category-leading, and the value brands undercut it.

What to know about Bosch

  • The three legacy R-410A systems are the only real trap. Climate 5000 A/B legacy (9,000-12,000 BTU) and Model C legacy (12,000 BTU) are on the phasing-down refrigerant. Gen 4 covers the same capacities on R-454B - buy Gen 4 unless the legacy discount is substantial.
  • Cold capability varies within Gen 4, between -22F and -13F depending on configuration, so confirm the specific system's rating rather than assuming the family number carries it. The model pages publish the certified figure per system.
  • Bosch is consistent rather than exceptional: SEER2 19-27.4 is a good band with no weak line in it, which is genuinely rare - most brands we track hide a +5F budget line somewhere in the range. Bosch does not.
  • Dealer-distributed and professionally installed; budget the contractor bill as part of the system price.

Bosch sizes and capacities

Room sizes use the same 25 BTU per square foot baseline as our sizing calculator, for an average-insulation room. Run the calculator for a real answer.

  • 6,000 BTU - small bedroom or office to roughly 240 sq ft. Bosch covers the small end, which many brands skip.
  • 9,000 BTU - bedroom or office to roughly 350 sq ft.
  • 12,000 BTU - large bedroom or living room to roughly 475 sq ft, and the only capacity offered in all three legacy variants as well as Gen 4.
  • 18,000 BTU - open-plan space to roughly 700 sq ft, and the entry point for multi-zone.
  • 24,000 BTU - large open areas to roughly 950 sq ft.
  • 36,000 BTU - whole-floor or shop use to roughly 1,440 sq ft. Unlike most brands, Bosch holds efficiency reasonably at the top of its range rather than dropping off sharply.

Bosch multi-zone options

Bosch multi-zone is a single Gen 4 family covering 18,000-36,000 BTU at SEER2 23-25.1, with cold ratings between -22F and -13F depending on configuration. There is no separate budget multi-zone line and no confusingly-named sibling - which, after LG's three Multi F variants and GREE's Free Match versus Free Match ECO, is a genuine advantage.

For two rooms, price two single-zone systems first - single-zone avoids the part-load penalty and a failure only takes out one room.
