Fujitsu's AIRSTAGE range is engineering-led, installed by professionals, and easier to shop than it looks once you know one thing: the series name tells you the climate it's built for. The whole range uses current-generation R-32 refrigerant, so there's no outgoing-refrigerant risk anywhere in the lineup, which isn't true of every premium brand.

  • Altair (300, 500 and 700) handles everyday cooling and mild-winter heating. Every Altair is rated to heat only down to +5F, however efficient it is. - Orion is the cold-climate wall unit. - The XLTH keeps heating to -15F, and the XLTH+ to -22F. - The smaller sizes are among the most efficient systems you can buy. - H-series covers everything that isn't a wall unit: hidden ducted units, ceiling cassettes, floor consoles and air handlers. Its XLTH versions keep heating to -15F.

Who should buy Fujitsu: someone hiring a contractor who wants Mitsubishi-level engineering and documentation, and who buys Orion or an H-series XLTH for a cold climate. Who should skip it: DIY installers, and anyone shopping on price. Fujitsu's value is engineering, not the lowest number. What to know about Fujitsu

  • Efficiency and cold-weather ability are separate, and the Altair proves it. The Altair 700 is genuinely efficient, and it still stops at +5F. If your winters drop below +5F, choose Orion or an H-series XLTH, whatever your budget.
  • The XLTH+ is the deep-cold pick, but only in small sizes. It keeps heating to -22F, from 9,000 to 14,500 BTU. For -22F in a bigger room, no single Fujitsu wall unit can do it.
  • The XLTH covers most US cold climates. It keeps heating to -15F from 9,000 to 22,000 BTU, and it's the practical choice for a larger room.
  • For a large, cold space, look at the H-series XLTH. With the cold-climate outdoor unit, its hidden ducted, cassette, ceiling-suspended and air-handler systems run from 30,000 to 46,000 BTU and keep heating to -15F.
  • It's all R-32. Where other brands are still clearing R-410A stock, Fujitsu has finished the switch. That's one less thing to check.
  • Professional install, sold through dealers. Budget for the contractor as part of the system price.

Fujitsu sizes and capacities

For an average room, roughly:

  • 9,000 BTU - a bedroom or office up to about 350 sq ft. Every wall-unit line comes in this size, so it's where the Altair-or-Orion choice matters most.
  • 12,000 BTU - a large bedroom or living room up to about 475 sq ft, and the biggest Altair 700.
  • 14,500 BTU - up to about 580 sq ft. The biggest XLTH+, so it's the limit for -22F in a wall unit.
  • 18,000 to 22,000 BTU - an open living area up to about 700 to 880 sq ft. The XLTH reaches 22,000, the biggest cold-capable Fujitsu wall unit.
  • 30,000 to 46,000 BTU - a whole floor or a large open space.
    • In a wall unit, only the Altair 500 goes this big, up to 33,000 BTU, and it's rated only to +5F.
    • For a cold climate, the answer is an H-series XLTH, ducted or ceiling-mounted.

Fujitsu multi-zone options

Fujitsu's multi-room systems are only lightly covered here so far. We list one 4-zone and one 5-zone AIRSTAGE outdoor unit:

  • the 4-zone pairs with the cold-climate XLTH outdoor unit and keeps heating to -15F;
  • the 5-zone stops at +5F.

If you're planning a multi-room Fujitsu job, get the layout from a Fujitsu dealer. For two rooms, two single-zone systems are often the better buy anyway.
