Samsung's ductless range is organized around a comfort feature rather than a performance ladder, and that catches people out. Everything is professionally installed and uses current R-32 refrigerant.

The four WindFree lines (IAQ, Max Heat, Premium and Standard) are all equally efficient at the same sizes. What separates them is winter: - Max Heat keeps heating to -22F. - Premium is mixed: -22F on some systems, -5F on others. - IAQ and Standard stop at -5F.

So the tier name tells you about features and cold-weather ability, not efficiency.

"WindFree" is Samsung's no-draft cooling mode, which spreads the air through thousands of tiny holes instead of blowing it at you. It's a genuine comfort feature, and it's the main reason to choose Samsung over a cheaper brand with the same ratings.

Who should buy Samsung: someone hiring an installer who wants that draft-free comfort, and who chooses Max Heat for real winters. Who should skip it: anyone looking for the most efficiency for the money. Samsung's ratings are good, not class-leading, and you're paying for the comfort feature.

What to know about Samsung

  • Don't pay more for a WindFree tier on efficiency grounds. All four are rated the same at the same sizes. Choose on the cold rating and the features.
  • Max Heat is the only WindFree line that reliably reaches -22F. Premium varies from system to system, so check the model page rather than trusting the tier name.
  • Free Joint Multi Standard is the multi-room trap. It stops heating at +5F, while Free Joint Multi Premium keeps going to -13F. Same family name, 18 degrees apart.
  • A big room means giving up WindFree. The WindFree lines stop at 22,000 BTU. Above that, Samsung offers only standard high-wall units.
  • It's all R-32, so there's no outgoing-refrigerant risk.

Samsung sizes and capacities

For an average room, roughly:

  • 9,000 BTU - a bedroom or office up to about 350 sq ft. All four WindFree lines come in this size, so it's where the tier choice matters most.
  • 12,000 BTU - a large bedroom or living room up to about 475 sq ft.
  • 18,000 BTU - an open living area up to about 700 sq ft, and the smallest size in Samsung's multi-zone and commercial high-wall lines.
  • 22,000 BTU - a large room up to about 880 sq ft, and the biggest any WindFree line goes.
  • 33,000 BTU - a whole floor up to about 1,320 sq ft. Only the commercial high-wall and the 36K high-wall go this big, and both keep heating to -13F.

Samsung multi-zone options

Samsung's multi-room systems are the Free Joint Multi family, in two versions that differ far more than the name suggests:

  • Free Joint Multi Premium keeps heating to -13F, in sizes from 21,000 to 34,000 BTU.
  • Free Joint Multi Standard reaches 46,000 BTU, but stops heating at +5F.

So the bigger option is also the one that gives up in winter. For several rooms and a real winter, take Premium and live with the smaller size limit, or look at a brand whose big multi-zone systems keep a real cold rating. For two rooms, price two single-zone systems first.
