Samsung's ductless range is organised around a feature rather than a performance ladder, and that catches people out. We track 33 Samsung systems, all on R-32, all professionally installed.

All four WindFree lines certify identically on efficiency - IAQ, Max Heat, Premium and Standard each span 9,000-22,000 BTU at SEER2 20-25. The number that separates them is rated heating: Max Heat reaches -22F, Premium is mixed (-22F on some systems, -5F on others), and IAQ and Standard are -5F. So the tier name is telling you about features and cold capability, not about how efficient the system is.

"WindFree" itself refers to Samsung's no-draft cooling mode, which distributes air through thousands of micro-holes rather than blowing it at you. It is a genuine comfort feature and the main reason to choose Samsung over a cheaper brand with the same certified numbers.

Who should buy Samsung: someone hiring an installer who specifically wants the no-draft comfort behaviour, buying Max Heat if they need winter performance. Who should skip it: anyone optimising for efficiency per dollar - the certified numbers are good but not category-leading, and you are paying for the comfort feature.

What to know about Samsung

  • Efficiency does not vary across the WindFree tiers. If someone quotes you Premium over Standard on efficiency grounds, the certificates do not support it - all four span SEER2 20-25 at the same capacities. Choose on cold rating and features.
  • Max Heat is the only WindFree line that reliably holds -22F. Premium is inconsistent across its systems, so check the individual model page rather than trusting the tier name.
  • Free Joint Multi Standard is the multi-zone trap - SEER2 20-22.5 but rated to +5F, while Free Joint Multi Premium holds -13F. Same family name, 18 degrees apart.
  • Samsung's largest single-zone offering is a 33,000 BTU high-wall at SEER2 20; above 22,000 BTU the WindFree comfort lines stop, so a large room means giving up the feature you came for.
  • Whole catalog is R-32 - no legacy-refrigerant exposure.

Samsung sizes and capacities

Room sizes use the same 25 BTU per square foot baseline as our sizing calculator, for an average-insulation room. Run the calculator for a real answer.

  • 9,000 BTU - bedroom or office to roughly 350 sq ft, offered in all four WindFree lines, so this is where the tier choice matters most.
  • 12,000 BTU - large bedroom or living room to roughly 475 sq ft.
  • 18,000 BTU - open-plan space to roughly 700 sq ft, and the entry point for multi-zone and the commercial high-wall line.
  • 22,000 BTU - large rooms to roughly 880 sq ft, and the ceiling for every WindFree line.
  • 33,000 BTU - whole-floor use to roughly 1,320 sq ft, available only as the commercial high-wall or the standalone 36K high-wall, both at SEER2 20 and -13F.

Samsung multi-zone options

Samsung multi-zone is the Free Joint Multi family, in two variants that differ far more than the shared name suggests:

Free Joint Multi Premium (21,000-34,000 BTU, SEER2 21.5-23) - rated to -13F.

Free Joint Multi Standard (18,000-46,000 BTU, SEER2 20-22.5) - rated to +5F, but reaching 46,000 BTU.

So the larger, cheaper option is also the one that stops working in winter. If you are heating multiple rooms, take Premium and accept the lower capacity ceiling, or look at a brand whose large multi-zone holds a real cold rating.

For two rooms, price two single-zone systems first - single-zone avoids the part-load penalty and a failure only takes out one room.
