Panasonic's ductless range is small, strong, and carries one thing worth knowing before you shop: two of its four lines certify identically.

ClimaPure XZ and EXTERIOS Z both span 8,700-24,000 BTU at SEER2 20.5-27.5 with rated heating to -15F. Same capacities, same efficiency, same cold rating. If a quote presents one as an upgrade over the other on performance grounds, the certificates do not support it - the difference is branding and channel, not capability.

The other two lines: Project Series High Wall (9,000-24,000 BTU, SEER2 23.1-24.6, -13F) and a Multi-Zone family (18,000-36,000 BTU, SEER2 22-24.5, -15F). All 18 systems are professionally installed.

Who should buy Panasonic: someone hiring an installer who wants strong efficiency and solid cold-weather capability from a major Japanese brand without a sprawling product matrix. Who should skip it: anyone needing deep cold below -15F, or capacity above 24,000 BTU in a single zone.

What to know about Panasonic

  • ClimaPure XZ and EXTERIOS Z are the same performance. Choose on price, availability and installer familiarity.
  • SEER2 27.5 at -15F is a genuinely strong combination - most brands make you choose between the efficiency and the cold rating at this level.
  • Panasonic has no deep-cold line. -15F is the ceiling across the whole catalog, single- and multi-zone. In a climate that regularly goes below that, this is the wrong brand however good the numbers look.
  • No single-zone system above 24,000 BTU. A large open space needs multi-zone or another brand.
  • Consistent range with no +5F budget line hidden in it - which, having now written up most of this catalog, is rarer than it should be.

Panasonic sizes and capacities

  • 8,700-9,000 BTU - bedroom or office to roughly 350 sq ft, offered in every single-zone line.
  • 12,000 BTU - large bedroom or living room to roughly 475 sq ft.
  • 18,000 BTU - open-plan space to roughly 700 sq ft, and the entry point for multi-zone.
  • 24,000 BTU - large open areas to roughly 950 sq ft, and the ceiling for every Panasonic single-zone line.
  • Above 24,000 BTU - multi-zone only, up to 36,000 BTU.

Panasonic multi-zone options

Panasonic runs a single Multi-Zone family, 18,000-36,000 BTU at SEER2 22-24.5, rated to -15F - the same cold rating as the best single-zone lines, which is unusually consistent. Most brands drop several degrees when you move to multi-zone, and several hide a much weaker budget multi-zone line behind a similar name. Panasonic does neither.

For two rooms, price two single-zone systems first - single-zone avoids the part-load penalty and a failure only takes out one room.
