R-32 vs R-454B: the mini split refrigerant change explained

Mini splits are switching off the old R-410A refrigerant to two lower-impact replacements - R-32 and R-454B. For a buyer in 2026 the practical takeaway is simple: buy a current unit on either R-32 or R-454B (both are compliant and future-proof), and be cautious about an R-410A unit unless it's a genuine closeout bargain, because that refrigerant is being phased down and will get costlier to service. Why the change happened

Under the U.S. AIM Act, the industry is phasing down high-global-warming refrigerants. R-410A - the standard for the last two decades - has a high global-warming potential, so new equipment moved to lower-GWP replacements starting in 2025. The replacements, R-32 and R-454B, are both "A2L" refrigerants (mildly flammable, which changes some handling and code details - a pro's concern, not yours).

R-32 vs R-454B - the honest, homeowner-level difference

For the person living with the system, the difference is small:

  • R-32 — a single-component refrigerant with a GWP around 675. Easy to recharge (no blend to worry about). Common on imports and value brands (Gree, Senville's newer lines, Midea, Cooper & Hunter).
  • R-454B — a blend with a lower GWP (~466). Used by several premium brands (Mitsubishi, Carrier, Bosch, and parts of Daikin's range).

Both cool and heat the same from your chair. R-454B is a bit greener; R-32 is a bit simpler to service. Neither should make or break your buying decision - efficiency, sizing, install path, and price matter far more.

What actually matters for buying in 2026

  • Prefer current A2L (R-32 or R-454B). Both are compliant and will be supported for the long haul.
  • Be careful with R-410A stock. New R-410A units are largely phased out; what's left is often older or closeout inventory. It still works, but the refrigerant is being phased down, so future top-offs and repairs get more expensive and harder to source. A closeout R-410A unit can be a fine deal if the price reflects that - just go in eyes open.
  • Check the exact SKU. Some lines are mid-changeover (Senville's AURA moved to R-454B; older Leto stock may still be R-410A). We publish the refrigerant on every Senville AURA 12k 230V - confirm it there.
