Carrier is the most decodable catalog we track, once someone tells you the trick: the number in the line name is that line's top certified SEER2. Comfort 22 tops out at 22.4, Performance 26 at 26, Infinity 27 at 27.5, and Infinity 35 at 35.1 - the highest SEER2 figure in our entire catalog. Learn that and the range sorts itself.

We track 44 Carrier systems. The tier names run Comfort (entry), Performance (mainstream) and Infinity (premium), and multi-zone comes as Performance 25 (-13F) and Infinity 25 (-22F). Everything is professionally installed and dealer-distributed.

The catch is generational: 11 of the 44 are legacy R-410A systems, carried under engineering model numbers rather than marketing names - things like "Infinity 38MPRA/40MPHA". If a Carrier line name reads as a model number instead of a word, that is the outgoing refrigerant generation.

Who should buy Carrier: someone hiring a dealer who wants a long-established US brand with a genuine efficiency flagship, buying an Infinity or Performance line on R-454B. Who should skip it: anyone without a Carrier dealer nearby, and anyone shopping purely on price - the value brands deliver Performance-tier numbers for less.

What to know about Carrier

  • Infinity 35 is the efficiency high-water mark of this whole site - SEER2 25.8-35.1 with rated heating to -22F. It is offered only from 6,000 to 18,000 BTU, so it is a small-room flagship, not a whole-house answer.
  • Avoid the legacy R-410A lines unless the discount is large. The five legacy families (Infinity 38MPRA/40MPHA, 38MPRA/40MPHB, 38MPRB/40MPHA, Performance 38MAQ/40MAHB, 38MARB/40MAHB) are on the phasing-down refrigerant, which means rising service cost over the life of the system. Their marketing-named R-454B equivalents are already in the catalog.
  • We do not hold published low-ambient ratings for Comfort 22, Infinity 27 or any of the legacy lines. That is a gap in the manufacturer documentation we can verify, not an implied +5F. If cold-weather heating is the reason you are buying, choose from the lines where the rating is published - Infinity 35 (-22F), Performance 26 (-13F), Infinity 25 (-22F) or Performance 25 (-13F) - or ask your dealer for the submittal.
  • Comfort 22 reaches 36,000 BTU, so as with most brands the largest single-zone Carrier is also among the least efficient.

Carrier sizes and capacities

Room sizes use the same 25 BTU per square foot baseline as our sizing calculator, for an average-insulation room. Run the calculator for a real answer.

  • 6,000 BTU - small bedroom or office to roughly 240 sq ft, in Infinity 27 and Infinity 35. The 6k Infinity 35 is the most efficient system we certify anywhere.
  • 9,000 BTU - bedroom or office to roughly 350 sq ft, offered across Comfort, Performance and the legacy lines.
  • 12,000 BTU - large bedroom or living room to roughly 475 sq ft.
  • 18,000 BTU - open-plan space to roughly 700 sq ft. Top of the Infinity 35 range, and the entry point for multi-zone.
  • 22,000-24,000 BTU - large open areas to roughly 900 sq ft.
  • 33,000-36,000 BTU - whole-floor use to roughly 1,320-1,440 sq ft, in Comfort 22, Performance 26 and Infinity 27.

Carrier multi-zone options

Carrier multi-zone is two lines that differ where it matters:

Performance 25 (18,000-36,000 BTU, SEER2 24-25.2) - rated to -13F.

Infinity 25 (19,000-36,000 BTU, SEER2 23.1-25) - rated to -22F, for roughly a point of SEER2.

Both are strong for multi-zone, where part-load penalties usually pull ratings into the high teens. Note that both carry "25" - here the number is the efficiency tier and the tier name carries the cold-weather difference, which is the reverse of how the single-zone lines read.

For two rooms, price two single-zone systems first - single-zone avoids the part-load penalty and a failure only takes out one room.
