The Essenza 12k is Pioneer's cheapest way into a 1-ton room, and the price is the whole argument. SEER2 17 is the lowest efficiency Pioneer sells, and rated heating stops at +5F - so this is a cooling unit that happens to have a heat pump attached.
In a hot climate where winter is incidental that is a reasonable trade. Anywhere with a real winter, the Diamante Pro 12k costs modestly more and holds -4F, and Quantum Ultra holds -13F.
