Klimaire is a value brand with a real problem for shoppers: its product lines are named with engineering model codes, not marketing names. KIWQ- KOIQ, KIWE-KOIE, KMIP-KIWP, KMIR, KMHR. None of those tell you anything, so here is the translation for the 21 systems we track.

  • KIWQ-KOIQ DIY - the main single-zone line. SEER2 19-24, rated -13F to -4F depending on system, 9,000-36,000 BTU, with 115V options. - KIWE-KOIE - the budget single-zone line. SEER2 17 flat, rated to +5F, 11,500-35,000 BTU. - KMHR Hyper Heat - multi-zone, rated to -22F, SEER2 21-21.5. - KMIP-KIWP DIY and KMIR - multi-zone at -13F, SEER2 22-24.

Klimaire is mixed on installation: roughly half the catalog is DIY-marketed (the lines carrying "DIY" in the name) and half is professional-install.

Who should buy Klimaire: a price-led buyer who has decoded the range and is buying KIWQ-KOIQ or a KMHR multi-zone. Who should skip it: anyone who wants to shop by name rather than by spec sheet, and anyone landing on KIWE-KOIE for heating.

What to know about Klimaire

  • KIWE-KOIE is the floor and it is a steep one - SEER2 17 and +5F, against -22F at the top of the multi-zone range. It also reaches 35,000 BTU, so the largest cheap Klimaire is the least capable.
  • The "DIY" in a line name is meaningful - KIWQ-KOIQ DIY and KMIP-KIWP DIY are the DIY-marketed lines. KMIR and KMHR are professional-install. Confirm which you are buying, because it changes both the price and the warranty conditions.
  • KMHR Hyper Heat is the only Klimaire rated to -22F, and it is multi-zone only. There is no deep-cold single-zone Klimaire.
  • Cold ratings vary within KIWQ-KOIQ (some systems -13F, some -4F). Check the individual model page rather than assuming the line carries one number.

Klimaire sizes and capacities

Room sizes use the same 25 BTU per square foot baseline as our sizing calculator, for an average-insulation room. Run the calculator for a real answer.

  • 9,000 BTU - bedroom or office to roughly 350 sq ft, KIWQ-KOIQ only.
  • 11,500-12,000 BTU - large bedroom or living room to roughly 475 sq ft, and where KIWE-KOIE starts.
  • 18,000 BTU - open-plan space to roughly 700 sq ft, and the entry point for all three multi-zone lines.
  • 24,000 BTU - large open areas to roughly 950 sq ft.
  • 35,000-36,000 BTU - whole-floor use to roughly 1,400 sq ft, in KIWQ-KOIQ and KIWE-KOIE.

Klimaire multi-zone options

Three multi-zone lines, and again the codes carry the meaning:

KMHR Hyper Heat (19,000-36,000 BTU, SEER2 21-21.5) - -22F. The only deep-cold option Klimaire makes, in any format.

KMIR (18,000-35,000 BTU, SEER2 23-23.1) - -13F, professional install, and the efficiency leader.

KMIP-KIWP DIY (18,000-42,000 BTU, SEER2 22-24) - -13F, DIY-marketed, and the largest capacity at 42,000 BTU.

For two rooms, price two single-zone systems first - single-zone avoids the part-load penalty and a failure only takes out one room.
