Not every multi-zone condenser lets you mix head types

The usual multi-zone plan is a mix: a wall unit in the office, a cassette in the living room, a ducted handler for the bedrooms. It is a good plan, and for a large fraction of condensers on the market it is simply not available. The outdoor unit's combination table decides which indoor units you may attach, and that list is often much narrower than the brochure implies. We have now read those matrices for 104 of the multi-zone condensers we publish, covering 1,870 individual head pairings, so this is measurable rather than anecdotal.

The finding

Of the 104 condensers where we hold the manufacturer's compatibility matrix, 25 accept wall-mounted heads and nothing else. No cassette. No concealed ducted. No floor console.

That is not a budget-brand problem. It includes premium lines - Daikin's Daikin AURORA Multi R-32 17.2k 230V accepts four capacity classes, all of them wall units.

At the other end, ACiQ's ACiQ Multi-Zone Extreme Series 36k 230V accepts 22 heads across six different form factors - wall, one-way cassette, four-way cassette, concealed ducted, ceiling cassette and multi-position air handler. You can build almost any room mix on it.

Same category of product. Completely different systems to live with.

Why this catches people out

You choose a condenser on the things that are easy to compare - capacity, efficiency, cold-weather rating, price - and none of those tell you what you may hang off it. The constraint only appears when your installer prices the job and says the cassette you wanted is not on the compatibility list.

By then the outdoor unit is often already chosen, and the options are a wall unit you did not want or a different condenser.

Capacity classes are constrained too

The matrix limits sizes as well as shapes. Some real examples from the tables we read:

  • ACiQ's ACiQ Multi-Zone Essentials 17.7k 230V accepts only 9k and 12k heads. If one of your two rooms needs 18k, this condenser cannot serve it, whatever the outdoor capacity suggests.
  • Klimaire's KMIP218 matrix lists only 9k and 12k combinations.
  • Samsung's AJ020 tables list 7k, 9k, 12k and 15k - no 18k or 24k class.
  • Several TOSOT TMH condensers publish indoor documentation for classes their own combination tables never use.

The last one is worth pausing on: a head existing in the brand's catalogue does not mean it is approved on your condenser. The combination table is the authority, not the accessory list.

How to use this

  1. Decide the head types before the condenser. Walk the house and write down what each room actually needs - a cassette in a room with no wall space, a ducted handler for two small bedrooms off one hallway. Read wall, ceiling or floor if you are unsure.
  2. Then filter condensers by what they accept. Our model pages list every compatible head we have verified, with the manufacturer document behind it.
  3. Check the capacity classes, not just the total. A 36,000 BTU condenser that only accepts 9k and 12k heads cannot serve a room needing 18k.
  4. Size the rooms properly first - how to size a multi-zone system and how many zones you need. Compatibility is the second question; the first is whether multi-zone is right at all, which single vs multi-zone covers.

What we do not have

We hold verified compatibility matrices for 104 of the multi-zone condensers we publish, not all of them. Where a manufacturer does not publish an exact condenser-to-head matrix we leave that system's list empty rather than infer one from a parts catalogue or a similar model - Blueridge and Midea are both in that position today.

A near-match here is worse than a blank. Pairing a head that is not on the approved list produces a system that will not commission, and the reader has no way to tell our guess from the manufacturer's table.
