The Multi F LGRED and Multi F MAX LGRED versions add LG's low-temperature (LGRED) heating for cold climates.
• Value brands (professional install, buyable). Gree and other value-tier makers sell R-32 multi-zone stocked at retail - solid mid-efficiency (around SEER2 21) at a lower price than the premium brands. Gree's Free Match is the buyable value pick (see below).
• MRCOOL DIY (self install). The multi-room system that keeps the precharged, no-vacuum self-install path, 3 to 6 zones. Its rated efficiency is configuration-dependent (see below), so it stays unrated - you trade a certified number for the ability to install it yourself.

When multi-zone is the right call

• Three or more rooms that genuinely need conditioning, with no duct option.
• One viable outdoor location - a small lot, HOA rules, or a condo where you can't place several condensers.
• You want one outdoor unit and one maintenance relationship.

A note on multi-zone efficiency ratings

Multi-zone efficiency depends on which and how many indoor heads you pair with the outdoor unit, so there is no one true number for every setup. Manufacturers handle this differently, and we follow their evidence:

• Mitsubishi MXZ publishes a certified nominal rating for the all-non-ducted configuration - a real AHRI number we can show and score - while being clear that your actual efficiency shifts with the exact heads you attach.
• MRCOOL DIY does not certify a combination rating, so we treat its SEER2 as configuration-dependent and withhold a single figure rather than print a flattering one.

Either way: don't shop multi-zone like a single-zone SEER2. Size each head to its room and use the manufacturer's combination table.

Best professional multi-zone: Mitsubishi MXZ SMART MULTI

The standout is the Mitsubishi Electric MXZ SMART MULTI H2i 36k 230V (SM36NLHZ)

• a certified, cold-capable benchmark, pairing certified nominal SEER2 23 efficiency with H2i deep-cold heating across four zones. Need fewer or more rooms on the same rated, cold-capable platform? Best cold-climate whole home: Mitsubishi MXZ 8-zone Hyper-Heat

For a large house in a real winter, the Mitsubishi Electric MXZ SMART MULTI H2i 48k 230V (SM48NLHZ) puts up to eight heads on one condenser with top-tier certified efficiency and H2i heating for the whole house. The Mitsubishi Electric MXZ SMART MULTI H2i 42k 230V (SM42NLHZ) is the mid-size cold-climate pick - and a far better buy than the older, budget Mitsubishi Electric Ported Multi-Zone 40.5k 230V, which is the least efficient MXZ multi-zone and not ENERGY STAR certified.

Best R-32 professional option: Fujitsu AIRSTAGE H-series

If you prefer Fujitsu or want R-32 refrigerant, the current AIRSTAGE H-series multi-zone comes in two sizes: the Fujitsu AIRSTAGE H-series 35.2k 230V (AOUH36KWAH4), certified at its full rated heating output at 5F, and the larger Fujitsu AIRSTAGE H-series 43k 230V (AOUH45KWAS5). Both are ENERGY STAR certified and rated (certified nominal SEER2 22). The catch: Fujitsu's current R-32 multi-zone lineup does not yet cover 2- or 3-zone homes - for those, Mitsubishi MXZ is the professional choice.

Cold-climate Daikin: AURORA Multi

Daikin's cold-climate multi-zone line is rated to heat down to -13F. The Daikin AURORA Multi R-32 24k 230V and Daikin AURORA Multi R-32 34.4k 230V are R-32, ENERGY STAR certified, and AHRI cold-climate designated, with strong certified heating at 5F; where winters bring heavy snow and ice, the matching MXTH versions (e.g. the Daikin AURORA Multi R-32 34.4k 230V) add a drain-pan heater. If cost matters more than the coldest-climate hardware, Daikin's Daikin Standard Multi R-32 23k 230V line is the value tier - and several sizes are stocked at retail, so you can buy the condenser from a Daikin-authorized seller (it still needs professional installation). The stocked Standard Multi is rated only to +5F, so it is a mild-climate system.

LG's Multi F line pairs solid multi-zone efficiency with retail availability. The standard LG Multi F R-32 18k 230V and LG Multi F R-32 24k 230V post a certified nominal SEER2 of 22.5 (rated to -4F), and for cold climates the LG Multi F LGRED R-32 24k 230V line adds LG's low-temperature heating. The flagship LG Multi F MAX LGRED R-32 36k 230V posts SEER2 22, EER2 14.5 and HSPF2 11. All are stocked at retail, so - like Daikin's value tier - you can buy the condenser, though LG voids the warranty on online purchases from sellers it hasn't authorized, and it still needs professional installation.

High efficiency with cold-climate ratings: Bosch Climate 5000 Max Performance

The R-454B Bosch Bosch Climate 5000 Gen 4 36k 230V line pairs high efficiency (certified nominal SEER2 up to 25.1 on the Bosch Climate 5000 Gen 4 18k 230V units) with genuine cold-climate heating - the Max Performance versions are rated to deliver more heat at 17F than at 47F. All are ENERGY STAR certified, cold-climate designated, and backed by Bosch's brand and warranty, but dealer-quoted rather than stocked.

High efficiency: Midea Advantage Series

Midea - one of the world's largest HVAC manufacturers - posts some of the highest multi-zone efficiency in our catalog: the R-454B Midea Advantage Series Multi-Zone 24k 230V reaches a certified nominal SEER2 of 25.2. The Midea Advantage Series Multi-Zone High-Heat 30k 230V version trades a little peak efficiency for genuine cold-climate heating - it carries more certified heating at 5F than at 47F. Both are ENERGY STAR certified and cold-climate designated, but dealer-quoted (not stocked for direct purchase).

Brand-name, dealer-installed: Carrier Infinity 25

For buyers who want a major HVAC brand name, Carrier's R-454B multi-zone comes in two tiers: the dealer-quoted Carrier Performance 25 18k 230V (certified nominal SEER2 up to 25.2) and the premium cold-climate Carrier Infinity 25 30k 230V, whose certified heating at 5F exceeds its 47F rating. Carrier voids warranty coverage on internet purchases, so buy either one through a Carrier dealer (get installation quotes). Both are ENERGY STAR certified and cold-climate designated.

Best value, buyable: Gree Free Match

If you want a professionally installed multi-zone on a tighter budget, Gree - one of the world's largest air-conditioner manufacturers - sells its R-32 GREE Free Match 24k 230V line (marketed as "Multi R32") at a solid certified nominal SEER2 of 21, ENERGY STAR certified, and stocked at retail so you can buy the condenser, and it undercuts the premium brands on price. Gree also offers a budget GREE Free Match ECO 24k 230V line, but at SEER2 17 its efficiency is notably lower - choose the standard Free Match unless first cost is the only priority.

Before you buy multi-zone

• Size each zone, don't sum square footage. Multi-zone "connected capacity" tempts oversizing; size each head to its room with the sizing calculator.
• Price the single-zone alternative. For two or three rooms, run both in the installation cost estimator.
