Quote math

What a 12k professional quote is paying for

Default 12k single-zone model: wood-stud wall, 25 ft line path, easy gravity drain, wall mount, available panel space.

Equipment

$889 to $1,131

estimate; Median current equipment price from 63 offer(s)

Indoor head, outdoor condenser, and the base equipment price band.

Labor

$1,600 to $4,050

estimate; National default labor multiplier

Mounting, wall penetration, evacuation, startup, commissioning, and local labor-rate adjustment.

Line set and materials

$520 to $1,665

estimate; Line-set, mounting, drainage, and job-material allowance

Line set allowance, mounting hardware, drainage materials, wall-type materials, and extra-foot adders.

Electrical

$300 to $1,000

estimate; Panel-condition electrical allowance

Dedicated circuit, disconnect, and panel-condition allowance; actual code scope is local.

Permit

$75 to $550

estimate; National permit and inspection allowance

Planning allowance for permit and inspection fees where required.

Removal and disposal

Quote-specific

Not modelled in the estimator; require this as a written quote line when old equipment is removed.

Disposal can be zero on a new install or a real add-on when a contractor removes old equipment, brackets, or abandoned materials.

Regional adders

State labor data changes the pro-installed line

We hold 50 state cost pages. Where a state labor multiplier exists, the regional page applies it to the pro labor line and keeps equipment, materials, electrical, and permit assumptions on the shared model.

Before you request quotes

Legitimate mini-split quotes should itemize these lines

  • Indoor and outdoor model numbers, zone count, capacity class, refrigerant, and AHRI reference where available.
  • Equipment price separated from labor, not hidden inside one round installed total.
  • Line-set length, wall penetrations, mounting pad or bracket, condensate drain or pump, and any extra materials.
  • Electrical scope: dedicated circuit, disconnect, breaker/MOP, MCA, panel condition, and who is doing the work.
  • Permit and inspection responsibility, including mechanical and electrical permits where required locally.
  • Removal or disposal of old equipment, patching, drywall, roof work, or other work outside the base install.
  • Startup and commissioning steps: pressure test, evacuation, refrigerant release/charge, and operating checks.
  • Warranty terms, registration responsibility, labor warranty, and what voids coverage.

Installation cost estimator

The form uses the same installation-cost methodology line-item model as the static tables and swaps in current equipment-price medians when our product data has them.

Project assumptions

This is a planning estimate, not a local quote. Actual mini-split installation cost depends on local labor, permits, site conditions, electrical work, materials, equipment availability, and contractor scope; get written local quotes before making purchase or installation decisions.

What does mini-split installation cost?

A professionally installed single-zone mini-split costs equipment plus labor, and multi-zone systems climb from there. The spread is wide because installation is where the variables live: how far the indoor head sits from the outdoor unit, how hard the line set and electrical runs are, whether a new circuit is needed, and your local labor rates.

This estimator gives you a realistic range for your setup so a quote can't blindside you - and so you can tell a fair bid from a padded one.

Where the money actually goes

  • Equipment - the indoor head(s) and outdoor condenser - the part you shop on our model pages
  • Line set + mounting - refrigerant lines, wall brackets or a pad, and the penetration/sealing
  • Electrical - a dedicated 115V or 230V circuit and disconnect - often the swing factor
  • Labor - vacuum, charge, startup, and commissioning - the part that must be done right
  • Extras - long line runs, condensate pumps, electrical panel work, or difficult access

DIY changes the math

Pre-charged DIY systems (like MRCOOL DIY) ship with a quick-connect line set and don't require a vacuum pump or gauges, so a capable homeowner can skip most of the labor cost - leaving roughly the price of the equipment plus a circuit. That path isn't for everyone, and it only applies to systems designed for it; our brand guides flag which ones qualify.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to install a mini-split?
It depends on your setup. Equipment is one part; line-set length, a new electrical circuit, wall type, drainage and your local labor rates move the total most, and multi-zone systems cost more. The estimator above gives a range for your inputs, and you can request local quotes to confirm.
Is a mini-split cheaper to install than central air?
Often yes for a room or an addition, because a ductless mini-split skips ductwork entirely. For conditioning a whole existing home, the comparison depends on how many zones you need versus running new ducts - our guides walk through when each makes sense.
Can I install a mini-split myself to save money?
Only with a system designed for DIY (a pre-charged, quick-connect kit). Those need no vacuum pump or gauges and can keep the warranty valid on self-install, but EPA's Section 608 guidance says connecting pre-charged lines still requires technician certification. Standard mini-splits require a vacuum, refrigerant handling, and a licensed electrician - that is a professional job.
